Village Shade Works
operated a lamp shade specialty shop
in Bedford, Nova Scotia, for 13 years. During that time we custom
made lampshades, taught lampshade
making, sold materials for the lampshade
maker, as well as lamp bases,
lamp and electric parts, and also
did some lamp repair. As with
most styles and crafts, the trend has changed
dramatically--country styles gave way to more
contemporary, people became caught up in the "change--buy
cheap and throw it away in a couple of years" idea, imports
from overseas became available at low prices, etc.,
etc.!! We found we had to make some changes--go bigger into
the lighting field with imports, fixtures, etc. or get out of it
altogether. We decided we weren't interested in trying to compete with
the big box stores!
After much thought and consideration, we
did realize we were continuing to fill a much needed
void--that of providing custom work and service for
the discerning buyer. The available ready made shades
are very limited in styles, colours, etc. New
lamps are often fitted with plain or boring shades. Older
lamps keep their value and purpose, but often the shades are worn out
or outdated. This is where we could continue to help.
We now offer the custom work from our home. We work
on an appointment basis, offer free consultation, carry some materials,
