Bridge Lamps and Shades

Bridge Lampshade - Village Shade WorksA style of lamp made popular years ago is the bridge lamp. The socket was positioned downwards, with a threaded casing allowing the shade to be screwed onto the end. In this way, the light could be directed onto an activity such as reading, needle work, and likely a bridge game or two!

There were table lamps and bed lamps wired in this way, but the most common was the floor lamp. Many of these were made from metals such as wrought iron, and also wood--pine, maple, oak, etc. Roxton was one very popular maker of the wooden ones, as they complemented their reproduction colonial furniture styles. There are many of these lamps still available, but finding a new shade to fit is usually a problem. The big shade manufacturers don't seem to be making them any more.

We are often called upon to recover original frames, but also have access to new frames and wires with the bridge fitting. A new shade can also allow for a change in color, as well as style or shape. An older style lamp can look very good in a more contemporay setting -- just update the shade!
